Default Dhaka: World’s megacity of the Future.

The website Global Post recently published a series of reports on the world's fastest growing megacity, Dhaka, Bangladesh. According to the U.N., Dhaka will go from being the world's ninth largest city to its fifth by 2025, adding more than six million residents in the process. Dhaka's growth points to the challenges facing Earth's megacities, both old and new. Here is the list of the cities the U.N. thinks will be the world's largest in the year 2025.

1. Tokyo
2. Delhi
3. Mumbai
4. Sao Paulo
5. Dhaka
6. Mexico City
7. New York
8. Calcutta
9. Shanghai
10. Karachi.

That needs to be controlled. Decentralisation is needed as soon as possible.

hope family planning policies(that actually work) are introduced by the government(s) in the coming years.by the looks of it,with the damage done till date,i don't think even a 100% literate bangladesh can aviod overpopulation till the start of the next century.

thats one list we dont want to top.... at least not at the current condition...

what do you think is the actual population that Dhaka city can sustain with the current infrastructure? 7-8 million might be a stretch, is it more like 5-6 million?

hehe Ahmed bhai.... in 2025 even if whole Dhaka turns into rubbles and slums are the only standing structure... the population might hit 20 million.

that day people getting on the bus to Dhaka from Sirajganj will realise the bus station is already part of Dhaka...

maybe thats the our only hope of decentralization, call the whole Bangladesh Dhaka..

Megacity?? sounds to me more like MegaShi**y.

Amazingly, there is one Chinese city named on that top 10 list. Probably goes to tell something about the their decentralization process.

Population outburst should have been the main cause of concern in BD, and without sufficient and appropriate infrastructure, that outburst is even more devastating in the long run, but looks good in the short run as our foxy and greedy politicians keep on sending more and more non-skilled ‘human resources’ abroad and getting invaluable foreign currencies for their big tummies.

The foxy politicians never mention that enough and appropriate infrastructure is needed for the training and development of our increasing population, and without skilled labor, that flow of foreign currencies will be slow and slower and at one point, unemployment in BD will soar and corruption and chadabaji for survival will be out of control, influx to Dhaka will be even greater.

Mighty intellectuals in BD have been busy with choking inflation, load shading, stingy mosquitoes and water shortage, now with a new ‘bug’ which moves: earthquake. Their intellectualism is only for themselves.

Only ‘tin pot dictator’ Ershad did harness the population growth quite a bit, and received a couple of goodies from the UN, since then, both 'aunts' have been busy with their looks, no body bothered for conducting another census to know the truth, the truth they are not able to cope with.

Well, we understand your limitations dear 'aunts', but look at Myanmar, what they did for population control as they neither have an infrastructure for absorbing bigger population nor have an intention to allow the overpopulation devour their economic growth. Myanmar made registration for all marriages mandatory and only one sibling per couple. In case of non-compliance, face the jail. As a result, Myanmar will not have any devastation like us and their economic growth is more sustainable and persistent than that of us in the long run.

Even though a mega planning for this mega city is often heard among the politicians, the Devastation has been already created for this once beautiful city uniquely known as a historical and cultural city, and all the shrewd and rich politicians moved most of their siblings abroad, waiting to scavenge on the dying ones before finally they leave the ‘debris’.

Excellent piece of writing.

The two ‘aunts’ or should I say the ‘intellectually paralysed grandmas’ are not the only one behind this mess. 99% of the politicians in Bangladesh lack a very important quality of leadership named ‘character/integrity’.

Unless Education, population control and decentralization becomes our national priority, we wouldn’t be able to get out from this mess.

Much before another 60 million comes in, Dhaka will cease to be a city worth living. Decentralization is the answer to keep Dhaka as a city for living. ohh I remember Ershad, the process was started by him but destroyed by his predecessors. yet, grateful that he created Upozillas, orelse, Dhaka would already have another 60 million.

Yes, agree, but decentralization must be quick and the new places must be appropriate otherwise it may backfire.
