FIFA World Cup 2014 Forum
Opened this forum for all the WC discussions. Currently at the top level. Once the cup is over, we will move it to the archive level. We will migrate some some threads from other sports to here. Let me know which ones.

I think opening match threads would be too cumbersome but neat and categorized. Or should we have a sticky single match thread?

IMHO - matches are short relative to cricket and people have less time to post updates here as the match is progressing (unless your name is Sohel and this is NHL).
Look to the past, grasshopper.
What seemed to have worked was Sagar's idea of opening a thread for each Group in the prelim rounds.
Check out the archive.

Great idea. Rooting for Brazil, the USA and all of the African and Asian teams (except Australia).
USA's in tough group and without Donovan, arguably the best American player to date. Doesn't look good but I expect them to compete hard and maybe even surprise their naysayers. I'll also be rooting for Mexico, Honduras and Costa Rica. Mexico may actually make it to the next round.
Don't know why Brazil's without Robinho and Kaka, but I still expect them to win it all. Obviously there's a lot of pressure to win, but the Brazilians know exactly how to handle that at home.
Expecting both Ghana and Ivory Cost to do extremely well and advance. Algeria also has a great team but needs goalscorers. Cameroon is but a mere shadow of what they used to be, and I don't think they'll do very much in the tournament.
Expecting both Japan and Korea to do well and advance. Iran also has a strong side but won't. Couldn't care less about Australia.
I see a Brazil-Germany final with the hosts prevailing 3-1.

I think it's changing. America will never get excited about the entire world cup. But a lot of buzz going around regarding team USA. Landon Donovan getting dropped was front line story all over the place. Klinsman saying USA thinking about winning world cup is not realistic is being discussed all over the place. It's not like other places where everyone's got something to say about every single game, but I think we are getting there. If you go out west, they have a much bigger fan base for the game than we do in the east coast.

www.cbc.ca, though I'm not sure if it will work for viewers outside Canada.

South Americans are equally crazy. I am lucky enough to see this staying in London.
Aus is bad mainly due to timing issue. Interest level is bad enough but timing just brings it down to zero.

On June 7, groups of Argentina and Brazil fans clashed over the World Cup — but not on the streets of Rio or in a sports bar in Buenos Aires. Instead, the unlikely location was Barisal, which is not — as it vaguely sounds — some upcountry Amazon backwater. It’s a port city of some 270,000 souls on the Kirtankhola River in Bangladesh. And the fans were Bangladeshi.

Is it just me or they finally figured out how to score T20 style in soccer? I don't watch soccer at all. I only watched a handful of games from SA2010 and was turned off by it. But this time I watched or at least kept up with 95% of the games. When the cup started, I didn't think I was gonna watch any games until the final. It really took on me this time. It could be this "new soccer" everyone keeps talking about.

I've been watching the World Cup since 1978 and this has been the best one by far. The tournament being held in Brazil may have rubbed off on so many teams playing positive soccer whilst teams holding on to game-killing tactics are falling away like dead flies. The number of non-White players playing for European teams has added a great deal of flair to traditionally boring sides like Belgium, Switzerland and off course, Germany. Coaches like Klinsmann and Peckerman have also tuned their teams (USA and Colombia) into playing to win, rather than "playing not to lose" and we're seeing the difference. Then there's the genius of Messi, Neymar, Oscar, Luiz and Thiago Silva we've been blessed to witness. My two cents.
