Default Bangabandhu Int'l Airport: First phase work to complete in 5yrs

Quote:
Bangabandhu Int'l Airport
First phase work to complete in 5yrs
3 sites in Mymensingh, Tangail under consideration
Jasim Uddin Khan
The government has drawn up a plan to construct the first phase of the proposed Tk 50,000 crore Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib International Airport in next five years under build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) basis.

As part of the plan Civil Aviation Authority, Bangladesh (CAAB) conducted a feasibility study over the last three months where they identified three possible sites for the airport.

Of the three, two are in Mymensingh and one is in Tangail.

An inter-ministerial meeting the day before yesterday at the civil aviation and tourism ministry preferred the site at Trishal in Mymensingh.

Civil Aviation and Tourism Secretary Shafique Alam Mehdi said the site at Trishal, 97 kilometres off the capital, would be given the top priority as it has about 1200 acres of government land in place.

CAAB handed over its feasibility study report to the ministry. The ministry will soon send a summary of it to the prime minister for her consent.

“Soon after the prime minister's consent we will appoint consultants and conduct the technical feasibility study within this year,” Shafique added.

According to the primary plan the airport will be established on about 6000 acres of land with three 9000 feet runways and all other modern facilities like Dubai or Singapore Airports.

An elevated expressway has also been planned under the project to link the airport with Dhaka.

Renowned airport builders will provide the fund for the project.

In the first phase a dual terminal and a runway will be constructed. It will also include a parking bay to accommodate 75 aircraft, support facilities and structures including a large maintenance hangar, a fire station and workshop.

Two more passenger terminals and runways are expected to be completed by 2020, Shafique said.

Ministry sources said reputable airport building agencies like Italian-Thai Development Corporation, Murray and Roberts of South Africa, Penta Ocean Construction and Obayashi Corporation have informally communicated with the ministry.

The civil aviation secretary said the airport would be the connecting link between the emerging and developed economies in the East and West.

“Bangladesh needs a gateway to East Asian and Middle Eastern and Western countries as air cargo transportation is growing day by day,” he said.

Shahjalal International Airport doesn't have adequate space and facilities to fulfil the demand,” Shafique said.

The airport has been planned in a way so that it can meet the demand of next hundred years, the official added.

A high official of the ministry said Shahajalal Airport was built when country's external trade was not more than $1 billion, which has now crossed $35 billion a year.

According to the CAAB statistics 1.5 lakh metric tonnes of freight have been transported through Shahjalal Airport in 2009 with a 20 percent growth annually.

The report says that it 2 sites in Mymensingh and 1 in Tangail are under consideration. They say they are planning to make it like Dubai or Singapore.

My question is why all the airlines in the region would choose an airport in a country where there is almost no economic or tourism activities. Also who are the investors who will invest 50 thousand crore BDT without any real return?

Instead of building a new airport they could develop the current CTG or cox's bazar airport. That is more practical. I am sure this is a plan to do some hori lut.

If they can't complete within their regime name change is inevitable.

i just hope they drop "bangabondhu" which foreigners can't pronounce and just keep it at Sheikh Mujib Int'l.

there is economic growth in the country, there has to be. but i too fear that this is one of those things pushed for its potential "kickbacks". well as long as the country too benefits, i wouldn't mind seeing a nice airport in BD, regardless of who its named after.

Do we even need that? Why does landmarks have to be named after someone.

And before anyone jumps on me and lectures me on our father of nation's contributions - I couldnt give a rats back. Anyone can take a loudspeaker and talk big, declare independence, its those that took the gun and took a bullet that deserve real respect.

not saying anything about the choice of name but why would you name infrastructure in your country depending on if foreigners can pronounce it or not ?
will the countries of these foreigners take bengali pronunciation practices into consideration while naming their airports ?

When Asaad said foreigners, he didn't mean people from other countries. He meant foreigners in our own country - like Chatgaiyas or sylhetis who are deficient in pronunciations. Also those ABCDs like Asaad.

So he was speaking for selfish reasons. He can't pronounce bongobondhu Nothing wrong with that logic.

It'll be fun to have foreigners distort the pronunciation to Bang-a-bandu. Would love to hear a Chinese traveller say it.

Btw, didn't it occur to Hasina that she might as well lose the next election and whoever (guessing BNP's turn next) is simply going to switch it? Hasina re hasina, to jalaye bachina.

Er, naive question here, but can it really be named Bangabandhu or Sheikh Mujib Inernational Airport? I thought the recent court ruling bringing about the name change of Zia International Airport was because we were not to name institutions or edifices after dictators; and, well, the passing of the Fourth Amendment by Bangabandhu, abolishing parliamentary democracy, banning all political parties, introducing one-party presidential rule, and making himself president for life, appears quite dictatorial to me.

that's a separate issue which I can understand and empathise with. here in India we are having every damn thing being named after this gandhi or that gandhi. another group in mumbai want to name everything after shivaji. farooq abdulla and sons wants to name everything in kashmir after sheikh abdulla.

Just name it "Mohammad Ashraful International Airport" for his great contribution in Bangladesh cricket's history.. problem solved. Then we can spend hours discussing about the name in BC, whether he deserved it or not or if having "Mohammad" in the name goes against secular principal etc.

On a different note, what's the point in spending 7 billion dollars in a new airport when we have other pressing needs like Power plants, Dhaka metro, Dhaka-Chittagong expressway, Deep Sea port etc. I think the current airport can be expanded/modernized to meet the demand for atleast the next 20-30 years.

yes, but none of those names are as gay-sounding as "bongobondu".

i'm not sure if "Bang-a-Bondu" is supposed to be the title of a porno, or "Bong-a-bondu" is utensil for smoking marijuana.

i think there is a proviso that applies to all dictators not belonging to the party or sentimentality of the government in power at time of name change.

Only one reasonable reason I can think of a new international airport is ... because current one restrict high rise construction in and around central Dhaka.

And ...

Other obvious reason could be of course 'Political Business'.

And ... last thing is ... why we should bother with name?! We third class citizen should be happy to have a new airport, no?

Who are the first class? ... could be the people here I said, and their die hard 'chamcha's for sure. Polarization in everywhere shows how to ensure that [recent judicial 'chamchami' teach us nothing?!]. Third class need no criteria, rather just has to be the 'not one of them'.
