Default Name your five favorite cities

Its 1:15 AM and snowing in NY. I have to stay awake for at least one more hour, expecting this phone call from County that is 13 hrs ahead of me. Trying to kill some time, thaught I'd open this thread. Name your five favorite cities. Here's my list;

1. Dhaka--Because memories die hard.
2. New York City--My home.
3. San Fransisco--Because of friends.
4. Washington DC-My second home.
5. Chittagong--Because of this girl I know.............

one of Dhaka/Chittagong should be on your list... Because if you list have one, you have the other.. there is hardly any difference.... dhaka might be a bit more crowded... and well lit.

So where in NYC and where in DC do you and did you live? From your story, chances are good I probably seen you walking around somehwere

A few places in NYC, 1990-1992 in San Fran. Never lived in DC but used to visit every other weekend and one Monday a month during 1993 to 2002, usually stayed with friends in Adams Morgan. Did some lobbying work.

Are the Greeks not amongst the most racist people in the world?

That's an interesting question. I'd like to hear the answer myself. I see that you are from Australia. I hear there's a prominent Greek immigrant sect there (like we have in Toronto). May be you could tell us some about that.

I have a Chinese/Quebecois friend who went backpacking in Europe couple of years ago. Out of all countries he visited, he found the Greeks to be the unfriendliest bunch. Appparently he had to cop a lot of racial abuse in many places (mostly outside the major urban centres). Of course, this is not to stereotype the Greeks as racists; it's just that I have heard the racist allegations against the Greeks from a number of sources.

My experience is a little different. I've been to Athens once but it was a short business trip and didn't really get to interact heavily with the locals. But I live in New York and went to school with a lot of Greeks. Like most Europeans they do have an air of superiority about them, that 'holier than thou' attitude and that's irritating. On the other hand, they are fiercly proud of their heritage, to the point where they make a lot of false claims. This can be good AND bad. As far as their attitude towards others, and this is obviously not true for all, I think it doesn't necessarily have to do with race but which particular culture one represents, which also racism but with a different twist.

It also has to do with the NY (or American) scene. They call this the 'melting pot' but I feel that hugely incomparable ingredient are thrown into this mix and what makes it work is that those elements have always fiercely retained their identity. So, its not really a melting pot but a nice little stew where you can taste all the ingredients, some more prominent than the others. And in order to preserve one's indentity one may come off as racist. They are as racist or as friendly as anyone.

I don’t know what criteria (cosmopolitan/beautiful nature/ entertainment facility/friendliness?) you guys are following but my observation is based on holiday visit and the quality of entertainment I had.
Top 5:
  • aiya napa, Cyprus
  • Ibiza, Spain
  • Rhodes island, Greece
  • Malta
  • Barbados
Worse 1:
1.Amsterdam, Holland (got kicked out by a security in red light area by mistakenly entering into a building, I was only 18, looked probably under age)

Interesting observation about new york and melting pot. I thought it also depends what you are melting and at what temperature and how long i.e. 'chicken' or 'beef'--- at 300degree or 450 degree --- for one hour or for 24 hours. For example whether its 'bura goru' (40+ years old new immigrant) or 'Bachur' (teen age new immigrant) that makes a big difference. 'Bachur' melts quickly than 'Bura Goru'. It also depends which part of the 'meat' we are talking: 'ran-than' (or from Moffoshol), 'buker gosto' (or from Dhaka), 'koliga' (or from gram gon-jo) naki wings (or from shylet) ... they all take different time to melt in the soup.
