Bangladesh Football Federation is likely to appoint a foreign coach before the national team's World Cup pre-qualifying match against Pakistan at home on June 29 as the game's governing body have all but given up hope on Croat coach Robert Rubcic's return. “We have so far failed to make any direct contact with Rubcic (Monday) so that we have almost closed the chapter of Rubcic. We are however hopeful about roping in a foreign coach before our home match against Pakistan,” said Badal Roy after a meeting of the National Team Management Committee (NTMC) yesterday. Rubcic left Bangladesh on June 2 without prior notice and the NTMC chairman, Badal Roy communicated with Rubcic's agent but failed to reach the coach, who was not paid his last four months' salaries. It has also been learnt that Rubcic appealed to FIFA to get his unpaid wages but the BFF officials informed that they have yet to get any notice from the world football's governing body even though they are ready to clear Rubcic's wages. Hasanuzzaman Khan Bablu, a member of NTMC though refuted the ground of such complaint from Rubcic, saying: “We were prepared to clear his (Rubcic's) wages, but could not since he left here without letting us know and without resigning his post. Then what could be his reason for complaint?” Roy informed that they have short-listed two European coaches for the national team both of whom have better coaching profile than Rubcic. The NTMC also decided to start the national camp from June 22 as most of national team's players, who play for Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, will be available for the camp after that date. Assistant coaches Golam Zilani and Mahbubur Rahman Roxy will conduct the training cam until a new coach is appointed. Accepting the blame for not giving enough time to prepare the national team ahead of pre-qualifiers, Roy said that some unplanned fixtures, nation-wide strikes from political parties and inclement weather left little time for the national team to prepare. Meanwhile, Bangladesh-born Danish booter Jamal Bhuiyan arrived in Dhaka on Sunday after his call-up for the 27-member preliminary squad earlier. “We will introduce him tomorrow (Tuesday) to the coaches. We have planned to arrange training for Jamal with the clubs' as we are yet to start the national camp,” said Roy. NTMC member Imtiaz Sultan Jonny said, “We will get an idea about how talented he is after seeing those training sessions.”

Staff Correspondent Bangladesh football coach Robert Rubcic has made a formal complaint to FIFA against the Bangladesh Football Federation over his unpaid salaries, officials said on Monday. Rubcic left Dhaka on June 2 without informing the BFF officials as he was not paid his salaries for four months as well as well as his food and lodging costs. The BFF initially played down the event saying he had left for an urgent family reason and should return soon. Though none of the federation officials was aware of his departure, the BFF vice-president and chairman of the national team management committee, Badal Roy, who was in Zurich to attend the FIFA congress, claimed upon his return that Rubcic had obtained permission from him. However, it became crystal clear within a few days that there was no family matter involved in his departure and the coach was clearly unhappy with the way he was treated by the BFF. The BFF also tried to sell a story that the coach has left the country as he was afraid of travelling to Pakistan for the return leg of World Cup qualifier, scheduled for July 3 in Lahore. As Rubcic did not maintain any contact, the federation turned to his agent, who also failed to give any solution to the crisis. The agent is said to have been able to only make a contact with the coach’s wife and son. Sources said the FIFA in letter asked the BFF to explain everything about Rubcic after they had received a complaint from the Croat. The BFF was preparing a reply, said the sources. The BFF also started looking for a possible replacement, who they could name in a day or two. A few candidates were identified through the agents, said Hasanuzzaman Khan Bablu, a member of the national team management committee. ‘Yes, we could not pay him for several months as we were in a financial crisis but he should have asked us for his salary,’ said Bablu. ‘He cannot leave the country without informing us. He has violated the agreement in doing this.’ he said. ‘We have already talked to some agents who sent us names of some interested candidates from Russia, Serbia, Brazil and Macedonia,’ he said. ‘We can even get the coach before our Pakistan game,’ added Bablu, himself a former national coach. Rubcic’s contract with the BFF expires in September this year.

Friday, June 17, 2011Sports Top six for Super Cup Sports Reporter The top six finishers of the ongoing Grameenphone Bangladesh League will be allowed to take part in the second edition of the Super Cup beginning in the second week of July. “To make the Super Cup more competitive, we have decided to allow top six finishers of the professional football league, instead of the top eight teams,” said Harunur Rashid, chairman of Bangladesh Football Federation tournament committee yesterday. The participating teams, split into two groups, will play in the double-leg first round, from where the top two finishers from each group will advance to the semifinals. According to the current standing of the 12-team league, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, Abahani, Muktijoddha and Sheikh Russel have already confirmed their berths but the fifth and six teams are to be decided from three strong contenders -- Mohammedan, Brothers Union and Rahmatganj. Rashid said that they would finalise the prize money of the champions and the participation fees after discussing with BFF president Kazi Salahuddin, who had earlier confirmed that champions will win Tk 1 crore like in the first edition held in 2009. The stalwart goalkeeper who held custody of the national team and many a local club, earning plaudits from coaches, fellow players and supporters, cited family commitments and making room for youngsters as the reason for his decision. “I have served the national team for a long time, and with satisfaction. I think it's time to call time on my international career while on a relative high. It is the job of the youngsters to take over the mantle now, and there are a few good ones. Now that I am giving up on international duty, I will be able to give more time to my family which was the chief reason for my retirement,” replied 33-year-old Aminul to the reporters at the BFF house yesterday. The retirement of Aminul comes hot on the heels of the denial of two more veterans, defender Rajani Kanta Barman and midfielder Matiur Rahman Munna, to play for the national team. Bangladesh are to be involved in two 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on June 29 and July 03, and all three of them had been named in the preliminary squad. “I have received the letter. We will sit for the executive committee meeting and take a decision on this regard,” said Badal Roy, vice-president of BFF and chairman of player management committee. “He has been wanting to retire for some time now. Even though it will be a great loss to the national side, we understand his position and we will consider his point when taking our decision,” Roy added. However, judging from previous instances of players retiring, it may not come as a great surprise if the goalie makes a u-turn soon. Aminul tried to avoid making any replies to such a query saying: “I cannot say about that at the moment.” The long-serving goalkeeper however brushed aside any hint of resentment. Aminul made his club debut with the Mohammedan junior team in 1994 before moving to Farashganj where he made his first division debut in 1996. He has represented most of the big clubs in the domestic football scene, but it was with Muktijodhha Sangsad that he spent ten years at the prime of his form. Aminul had been part of the national squad since 1996, but made his debut in 1998 in two friendly matches, first against the Qatar national team which the team drew 1-1 and then against Qatar u-23 which was also drawn 1-1. His latest commitment with the national side was against Hong Kong in the Asian Games in Ghuangzhou last November where Bangladesh lost 4-1. He was also slotted in for the AFC Challenge Cup Qualifiers in March 2011, but withdrew himself due to injury at the eleventh hour. Aminul had been part of the national sides that won the gold in the 1999 SAF Games, 2010 SA Games and also the 2003 SAFF Championship-winning team. Aminul paid tribute to George Kotan, the former Austrian coach of Bangladesh, for his role in resurrecting his career. “He gave my football a new life after my career-threatening injury in 1999. Sports Reporter Bangladesh's preparation for the FIFA World Cup pre-qualifiers against Pakistan got underway with 11 players out of 24 at the BKSP today. Coach Golam Jinali conducted training after nine players from Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, one from Brothers Union and Danish-born Bangladeshi booter Jamal Bhuiyan reported to the camp in the morning. Four players of Sheikh Russel were scheduled to join camp later yesterday night after their match against Chittagong Abahani while Farashganj SC's Sohel Rana is expected to join today morning. Besides, four Muktijoddha Sangsad players are scheduled to join the camp tonight after Muktijoddha Sangsad's game against Rahmatganj MFS while new coach Macedonian Nikola Ilievski is also expected to take charge before today's afternoon session. The rest of the three Abahani players will join the camp after their last match against Brothers Union on Monday. The players will return to Dhaka on June 28, just one day before Bangladesh's home match against Pakistan on June 29. The booters, who looked rather fatigued during the hour-long session due to the seven-month professional football league, said they wanted to keep their fatigue aside when they take on Pakistan, who will arrive in Dhaka today, in the home match on June 29 and then the away match on July 3 in Lahore. “All the players are tired after playing a long league but we are determined to give our hundred percent in both matches against Pakistan,” said striker Zahid Hasan Emily after the practice session. “We have had discussions among ourselves and everyone is committed to do something good against Pakistan as the advancement to the second round of the world cup pre-qualifiers will be something praiseworthy,” said Emily, who captained Bangladesh in their last international assignment in the AFC Challenge Cup in Myanmar. In this style you regain possession as soon as possible after losing it and I think we will be able to cope with his strategy,” said Emily. It was seen during the practice that the coach preferred his players to release the ball as soon as possible and take his position while a defender or a defensive midfielder goes to the attack to strengthen the forward line keeping four defenders intact in the backline. I'm really looking forward to this match. Usually in our world cup qualifier, we face Tajikstan who is a far better side and beat us most of the time. It's good now we're facing an weaker side in Pakistan. Overall both teams are on a similar level. This match in Dhaka will be very crucial. We have to come out with a win or else we're gonna be in trouble.

The Pakistan team arrived in Dhaka yesterday afternoon for the Dhaka leg match which takes place tomorrow and then will be hosting Bangladesh on July 3 in Lahore, after FIFA gave the all-clear on Friday regarding the security measures there, rejecting Bangladesh's appeal to hold the match in either Dhaka or a neutral venue. Tariq Lutfi, the coach of Pakistan, is convinced that the players and officials of Bangladesh will have the safest journey there. “There may be concerns in the mind of players and officials, but I feel that Pakistan is a safe country. What goes on outside is a different thing altogether, and you won't feel anything when you come,” said Lutfi after his team checked in at Ruposhi Bangla hotel yesterday. Lutfi also mentioned the Malaysia and Palestine football teams' visit to Pakistan as a case for tight security. Meanwhile the Pakistan coach expects good things from his team in tomorrow's match as they have been practising hard for a month and had a few practice matches as well. “We started preparation early this month and played six to seven practice matches against the premier division teams in Islamabad,” said Lutfi who took charge of the team six months ago, after his first stint in 1985. “We are grooming a new generation of players while we need some senior players as well. The boys have been playing good football for the last eight to nine months,” said Lutfi adding that the squad consists of four overseas players -- Adnan Farooq, Atif Bashir, Zeeshan Rahman and Ahmed Akbar Khan. Midfielder Farooq, who received training at the Manchester United football academy in 2001-2002, is now playing for an Iranian Club, Ahmed Akbar Khan is a UK-based playmaker, Atif Bashir is playing in the Australian league while Zeeshan Rahman, a former Fulham player, is now playing in the Thailand League. The squad has also 8 to 10 players who played the Olympic pre-qualifiers against Malaysia. Pakistan drew the home-leg match against Malaysia and lost the away match 2-0.
