Surprisingly yesterday there was no schedule of load shedding. Sometimes electricity was available 2-3 hours at a stretch!

Fridays arent bad usually. But we did have electircity outage after namaj on till nighttime 3 times I think.

It seems today the policy has gone back to 1 hr outage after 1 hr of availability though.

In other news, so much for govt policy to help the farmers of our country with 2 hr load shedding:

Villagers block highway demanding electricity

Our Correspondent, Brahmanbaria

Hundreds of villagers of Chandura village under Bijoynagar upazila of the district barricaded the Dhaka-Sylhet highway yesterday demanding continuous supply of electricity.

Local and police sources said that more than 500 villagers led by Chandura Union Parishad Chairman Dali Rani Das and sadar upazila Awami League president Kazi Haris Mia thronged to the upazila parishad office in the morning and chanted slogans demanding uninterrupted power supply in their village.

Later, they put a barricade on the highway from 9:00am to 10:00am. Hundreds of vehicles remained stranded on both sides of the road during the blockade.
“The electricity goes off so frequently that we cannot irrigate our land properly,” the villagers said.

On information, UNO Ripan Chakma and a police contingent led by ASP Sanchay Kumar Sarker rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
They also assured the agitating villagers of ensuring smooth supply of electricity to their village.

I have the practical experience of using a solar pannel & a battery bank for last three years. Batteries & solar pannels are still working fine. My Setup is in Kabul as it was disturbing a lot in those days. Now there is very ocassional power failure, like 2/3 hours in a month sometime. So I basically don't use the solar pannel anymore, just the battery bank charged in ellectricity for unforeseen failures.

pannels depending on Brand have a life of 15-20 years if well protected from physical/weather damages. Batteries also depends on nature of use but once in 2 years is very very early, it can last longer, sometimes changing the plates only can give additional life to the battery.

Problem with solar and battery bank is, if you want it for heavy use, it needs a lots of pannel and backup storage. I used it for only TV, Laptop, Mobile battery charging, one light (Low watt). One 12 volt battery would give me over 12 hours of TV & Mobile battery charging. It would reduce to 5/6 hours if Laptop was connected continuously. If I used the light continuously it would be about 2/3 hours. That's on one battery, if you connect more batteries in series, you will have multiples of it.

Our people in the rural areas do use Solar at home and in shops where there is no ellectricity. They use it for only lights at night and a few hours of BTV. City people probably finds it convenient to use generators since they have heavier use & it costs more on solar if you need to do heavy use. But for small families if you need just what I said i did above; solar is excellent. No sound/noise pollution. Alternatively there are high capacity solar pannels available, cost is also getting cheaper everyday, just keep upgrading your system with additional pannels and batteries to meet all your domestic power needs going completely solar someday.

The power-rush
Sharier Khan - The Daily Star - LINK

Government hopes to sign 1,000MW electricity deals in a month; PM targets 500MW import from India

Rushing to make up for the country's power deficit, the government is reportedly poised to sign up to 10 contracts by May 31 to eventually deliver up to 1,000MW power--enough to light up half of the populous capital city.
A top official of the Power Development Board, who requested anonymity, said the deals are the first of more than a dozen projects the government hopes to sign within a year to generate in all 5,700MW power. These include two very large coal-fired power plants in Khulna and Chittagong.
Most of these projects would take almost three years to complete--except for the two large coal power plants, which will begin operation in early 2015. But nearly a 1,000MW would be pumped into the national grid within a year, significantly easing the ongoing power crisis.
The contracts will require more than a $5 billion investment.
In three years, the move will well cover the power gap including the anticipated growth in demand.
At a ceremony to lay the foundation stone for a 150MW in Chandpur yesterday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said her government will try to import electricity through regional cooperation with countries throughout Asia.
"The present government has taken effective steps to import electricity on an urgent basis from India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar and China," the UNB quoted her as saying.
"We are aware of your sufferings," she said about frequent power cuts. "Let me assure you this government will not leave any stone unturned to increase power and gas production."
Economist Zaid Bakht predicted that if the government is successful pushing through the contracts, it could revive the smaller scale industries now hard hit by the power crisis.
"But for large industries, increasing natural gas supplies is very important," said Bakht. "Due to gas crisis, large investments have stalled. And we do not know what the government is doing to increase gas production. Gas is important for power generation as well."
Bakht also said financing of the contracts would depend on economics of each project and how transparent the government was in soliciting and awarding bids. "I feel that the government is not sharing enough information and people are not aware about what's going on," he said.
PDB Chairman ASM Alamgir Kabir agreed that financing would be a challenge.
"But we must try," he said. "In order to come out from the crisis, we will have to make all out efforts. If we can secure deals with good power companies, financing would not be a problem. After all, the government has got a good financing track record with power companies."
The Awami League government, in power for 14 months, has promised ambitious plans to add 9,000MW power by the end of its term. Until now, however, it has signed only a few deals totalling around 600MW.
With hourly load shedding affecting homes, offices and industries, the government is facing mounting criticism for poor implementation of its plans.
The Power Cell, Electricity Generation Company of Bangladesh (EGCB) and North West Power Generation Company (NWPGC) have all failed to complete a single tender in the last one year. It is often alleged that these small agencies easily get influenced by business lobbies, resulting in slowing down of the awarding of tenders.
"If they acted competently, we would have gained 1,000MW power from 2012," said a power ministry official.
The EGCB's poor handling of a 300MW power deal with World Bank financing is now going for a re-tender.
With a very poor track record of project implementation, the Power Cell is now set to publish the "request for proposal" document for its Bibiyana 450MW power project within two weeks. Two other tenders totalling 300MW capacity in Sirajganj and Khulna are also expected to make some major progress in May, officials claimed.
A consultant of Indian National Thermal Power Company is now carrying out a feasibility study to set up two largest projects: 1,350MW coal-fired power plants in Khulna and Chittagong. The Khulna plant will be publicly financed while the Chittagong would be under private investment.
"We have started acquiring land in Khulna and Chittagong in this connection," said the PDB official. "We hope by the end of this year, we will be able to sign agreements for these plants."
The government has also floated a tender to set up a 40km transmission line and a high voltage substation near the southwestern border of the country to import power from India.
At the ceremony yesterday Hasina said the technical experts team from both the countries are working hectically to make this happen.
"We hope we will be able to import 500MW electricity from India by 2012," she said.
PDB sources, however, said Bangladesh will more likely pull 250MW from this line.
If Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's upcoming visit to Russia can secure a nuclear power deal, the country will have another 2,000MW nuclear power project in the pipeline. It takes about six years to implement a nuclear power project. However, this move is still uncertain.

What happened to the Chatgaiya guy who could produce electricity out of thin air? All the commotions couple of years back? We had few BC members very excited on that.

So did he patent it and going commercial? We need his technology badly like yesterday!!

Here is some hard data analyzing the load shedding crisis over the last decade... I think the conclusions are a bit shady, definitely something to ponder. I definitely want to see more data on power generation capacity building and utilization of capacity.
http://jrahman.wordpress.com/2010/04...whom-to-blame/

This blog has some pretty good data as well...

Boro harvest best in decade

Farmers in northern region eye bumper production

Labourers carrying boro harvest at Raninagar in Naogaon on Sunday. The harvest is in full swing in the northern district, and labourers are happy with the pay they are getting this season.

The northern region of the country is eyeing at the best harvest of the decade as the biggest rice season sets at its peak.
For the resilient farmers of northern districts, who suffered erratic power supply and falling of groundwater table, prospect of a bumper boro production is exactly what they deserve.
Farmers of Naogaon, Bogra and Sirajganj had a hard time irrigating lands in the last few months of dry spell. The spell, however, came as a boon as the boro farmers hardly suffered pest infestation this season unlike last year.
Those who started harvesting early--from late April-- are all happy at the prospect of a bumper boro output.
Though dissatisfied with the interrupted power supply, farmers are also very appreciative of the government's policy supports like, subsidy in diesel used in running irrigation pumps, lowering prices and ensuring adequate supply of urea and non-urea fertilisers and fixing encouraging prices for paddy (Tk 17 /kg) and rice (Tk 25 /kg) for public procurement.
"The agriculture officers told us to run our pumps from 11:00pm to 5:00am. But we hardly had electricity for three hours with frequent interruption. Somehow, we managed it through various alternatives and now expect to reap over 2.4 metric tons of paddy per acre," said Abul Kalam Azad, a small farmer of Hatipara in Sirajganj, on Sunday.
While talking to The Daily Star the next day, Naogaon's Mohadevpur Upazila Agriculture Officer Mostafuzur Rahman admitted of erratic power supply.
He said, "They [farmers] ran pumps during the daytime too. We put our best efforts to help them enhance irrigation efficiency by introducing AWD (alternate wetting and drying) method. Besides, farmers running diesel pumps for irrigation are now getting supports from the government.”
Farmer Mohammad Jahangir of Shajahanpur upazila in Bogra district said each farmer who irrigated land measuring up to one hectare with diesel-run pumps would receive Tk 800 while each having more than one hectare of land Tk 1,000 as subsidy.
Shafiqul Islam is from a farmer family of Raiganj upazila in Sirajganj. He is also hoping for the best harvest in the last 10 years from their 400 hectares of farmlands. He expressed satisfaction over the fertiliser supply and its prices and fixing of the rice prices in tandem with international market.
Naogaon, a food-surplus district with Mohadevpur as the agriculturally rich upazila, is contributing in food production from the front.
Upazila Agriculture Officer of Mohadevpur Mostafizur Rahman said, " In 2008, we had the best boro output-- 3.8MT per hectare of land--in the last one decade. But this year the production is likely to exceed 4MT per hectare."
About the reasons behind this year's increased production Rahman said, "The fields had balanced proportions of urea and non-urea fertilisers. Previously, farmers had a tendency of over-using low-price urea, as non-urea fertilisers were costly."
The Agriculture Extension Services rendered training to farmers on how to identify low quality fertilisers and stop over-exploiting of groundwater, Rahman added.
