I will prove you right Gopal. I am one of the most street smart people I know and people who know me in person can vouch for that and I am also one of the biggest introverts you will come across.

Thanks, Shahriyar.

No, I didn't take time off studies. But I did take time off sleeping.

For 2 years, I slept 4 hours a day.

As for tuition, I paid total 130k+

earning halal money with your own sweat has a special feeling, because no one will value it more than you do for all the time and effort you have put into it.

i have worked several summer jobs since 2006 and also while in college...Jersey Mike's subs(kinda like subway)... i worked at a hospital for a couple of weeks. worked at my school for a summer program. i volunteered a lot too..

some jobs i quit because I just couldn't handle extra pressure, but the extra cash was sure worth it (bought my own video games/save up pocket money for college)

having all these job experience builds a better resume, my High School teacher advised us to take 2 year break and work full time and then enter college just to see how the real world is, sadly in America, the jump from High School to College, the intensity level is like from BD U-19 to BD national team versing Australlia, i am being serius

Not if you are working at a restaurant, where you have to mop the floor and clean the washroom at the end of the day as well.

However, it does make you respect life, and respect the ones who have to do just that for basic living. It also makes you be thankful to Allah, because that's when you know that He has given you a lot more fortune, coz there's millions in this world who don't have what you have.

It will. No worries.

But what's with the sudden change in attitude. I was about to quote one of your posts...where I almost fell of my chair seeing you write "Mashallah". I think it was the congrats to Tamim thread for his maiden ton!

Not complaining. Just surprised...based on what I know about you

PS. Sorry for being too personal about this.

Btw. Never worked at a Gas station. And hated the idea of working at a gas station. I heard pretty nasty stories about gas stations...that if someone drives off without paying (specially after the gas price skyrocketed), the manager made the employee pay for the gas. Simply hated the idea...and felt bad for the poor employee.

There is a trick to not cleaning the bathroom. You put a sign up in the door saying "out of order" but the bathroom really isn't out of order. So next time you go to a store or a resturant and the bathroom says "out of order" - you know some employees just don't wanna clean ur crap...

This was my first lesson as a bathroom cleaner..... Don't clean other's crap. :p

WOW I had never known that about you Kabir bhaiya, and after reading that I believe you deserve ALOTT of respect!! I am just speechless...I dont know how mant people could do waht you did like that!!

Speaking of white collor, blue collor, etc... I just hate it when people follow the typical stereotype about certain jobs. Infact I hate pretty much any type of stereotypes. I dont see what the problem is, working at Tim Hortons and McDonalds and etc. Sure it might be a bit hard but there is absolutely nothing wrong with it as long as you are earning your money through your hardwork. I am currently looking desperately for a job anywhere but cant really find anything. I remember when my uncle heard about it he was telling me how its a "low class" job and its not a job suited for me(apparently because I do not belong to a "low class" family) which was really ticking me off because IMHO I thought that was utter rubbish. IMO its a great way to gain some job experience and it would probably set you up for the real world when I am done my studies and stuff. The only problem is that I cant get any damn jobs!!

Nafis, thanks. Only one thing though. You may want to start your life by working at a restaurant or doing hard work. But that's not where you want to get stuck.

Having said that, when new immigrants come to Canada/US, they face the challenge of getting a proper job. They start working at restaurants and doing any job...to give their children the best they can. I have total respect for those parents. But if it's you who has been educated here and tried your best to be in the right path, you shouldn't have to see yourself doing those jobs.

Oh man! Your story is touchy. Don't they have credit system in Canada? Besides what about bursaries, scholarships?

Anyways those of you munching on pressing the NO button, don't worry.

Its coming.

When I got my admission papers from UofT, there was text bigger than the logo that stated "No financial support for International Students".

Grad studies without scholarship is difficult. My program paid me zero...instead, charged me at some 24% for late payment of fees!!!

Canadians and PRs in Ontario get OSAP...a gov't loan in Ontario.

I always hear from people that Canada is the easiest country to get papers. Looks like the real deal is much more vicious than rumors.

But you did well man, made the country proud. Hardship builds your bone and fathoms the caring nature - best of luck.

Lol. Well Canada is much easier, if you can get into university and graduate, you're almost guaranteed a PR. Now, this is a brand new addition to the immigration policies, so you may not have heard about it yet. It's much easier now.

Thanks. But made the country proud? I didn't do anything that deserves such praise. In fact, there's members here like Miraz who have done a million times more than me.

1) Miraz is different. He knows how to slow down time and would not share it with us. I requested many times to no avail. Sometimes I wondered he is an alien.

2) Very well done Kabir. Inspiring for others.

3) Never worked on a gas station or 7-11. I live down south. I don't want to get shot by rednecks or kaula prison breakers.

4) I think I have a bigger rap sheet than most of the fortunate people here in working for odd jobs. Never for once hated what I did. Even when cleaning bathrooms. It gave me minimum wage that went to Tuition and Fees. Besides, when you are here by yourself, staying busy keeps you out of trouble. Cadets have no problems if following or giving out orders unless you are one of those "tera cadets" who always wants to defy order, question everything (may be like Pagla Hasif, just an observation, may not be a fact).
