Rickshaw- the pride of Bangla in Aussie land !!

I do not know if any of you are aware of the fact that....Spanning ten weeks and five states and territories, the Great Aussie Rickshaw Ride will launch some 400 Aussie rickshaw riders on a 2000-kilometer quest to raise awareness about global poverty.

The message is simple: alleviating global poverty is achievable through people powered change. It happens when people like you, people who care, decide to take action.

The ride is sponsored by AusAID and profiles a great Australian aid organisation - Symbiosis International - that works to empower the people of Bangladesh and reduce poverty in that nation.

The idea began with a man named Jeff whose passions include cycling and helping the poor of Bangladesh, one of the poorest countries in the world. In an inspired moment, Jeff combined the two to make the Great Aussie Rickshaw Ride. Jeff believed that a mammoth rickshaw marathon, could help Australians become aware of global poverty.

Symbiosis International, an Australian organisation that works to alleviate poverty in Bangladesh, agreed with Jeff and applied for a grant through AusAID's Community Call to Action program.

The rickshaw economy

Every day rickshaws make seven million passenger trips, covering eleven million miles. That is more than double the number of passengers that travel on the London Underground.
In a given year, rickshaws in Dhaka do the equivalent of 160,000 laps around the world, or 8000 times to the moon and back!
The estimated 400,000 rickshaws in Dhaka generate more than $500 million a year.
Although each rickshaw only costs around $225, this is an unattainable amount of money for most rickshaw wallahs in Bangladesh and the majority of them rent their machines. After a long day of hauling people and goods, the wallah might make around $2.30, out of which he pays about 65c rent.
In a very real sense, the hard-working wallahs and their rickety machines help turn the wheels of this nation’s economy. Yet, for all their importance to Bangladesh, the wallah rarely rises above the poverty line.
