Commander of Sector 5, Valiant Freedom Fighter and receipient of Bir Uttom, the second highest gallantry award of Bangladesh passed away earlier this evening in Dhaka.
Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun.

We should take a moment to salute and honour the bravery and contribution of this War Hero.

We should join hands to pray for the departed and pray to the Almighty that He grants him Jannat.

The country lost one of her finest son today.

ঢাকা: মীর শওকত আলীর জন্ম ১৯৩৮ সালের ১১ জানুয়ারি পুরান ঢাকার নাজিরাবাজারে। আগাসাদেক রোডে শিাজীবন শুরু হয় তার। এরপর কিছুদিন ঢাকার মাহুতটুলির ফ্রি-প্রাইমারি স্কুলে লেখাপড়া করেন তিনি। ১৯৪৫ সালে ঢাকার আরমানিটোলা সরকারি উচ্চ ইংরেজি বিদ্যালয়ে ভর্তি হন। ১৯৫৩ সালে এই স্কুল থেকেই মেট্রিক পাশ করেন তিনি। ১৯৫৫ সালে ঢাকা কলেজ থেকে পাশ করেন ইন্টারমিডিয়েট।

১৯৫৫ সালে পাকিস্তান মিলিটারি একাডেমিতে ভর্তি হন মীর শওকত আলী। ১৮৫৮ সালে তিনি গ্রাজুয়েট ডিগ্রি লাভ করেন। একই সময়ে তিনি সেনাবাহিনীতে কমিশন প্রাপ্তও হন। তিনি ১৯৫৫ থেকে ১৯৬৬ সাল পর্যন্ত বিভিন্ন রেজিমেন্টে অ্যাডজুটেন্ট, কোয়ার্টার মাস্টার, কোম্পানি কমান্ডার ইত্যাদি দায়িত্ব পালন ছাড়াও সামরিক গোয়েন্দা বাহিনীতে কাজ করেন।

১৯৬৫ সালে পাক-ভারত যুদ্ধে বীরত্বের সঙ্গে অংশগ্রহণ করেন মীর শওকত আলী। ১৯৭১ সালের জানুয়ারি মাসে কোয়েটা স্টাফ কলেজ থেকে চট্টগ্রামের ষোল শহরে ৮ম বেঙ্গল রেজিমেন্টে পোস্টিং দিয়ে পাঠানো হয় তাকে।

১৯৭১ সালের ২৫ মার্চ পাকিস্তান হানাদার বাহিনী নিরস্ত্র বাঙালির উপর যখন ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়ে তখন মীর শওকত আলী চট্টগ্রামেই ছিলেন । সেসময় ৮ম বেঙ্গল রেজিমেন্টের কমান্ডার ছিলেন কর্নেল ঝানঝুয়া ও সেকেন্ড-ইন-কমান্ডার ছিলেন মেজর জিয়াউর রহমান। পচিশে মার্চ রাতে চট্টগ্রাম জেলা আওয়ামী লীগের সভাপতি আব্দুল হান্নানের কাছ থেকে টেলিফোনে পাকিস্তানি সামরিক বাহিনীর বর্বর হত্যাকাণ্ডের খবর পান মীর শওকত।

এ সময়ই মেজর জিয়াউর রহমান ও মেজর মীর শওকতের নেতৃত্বে ৮ম বেঙ্গল রেজিমেন্টের বাঙালি সৈন্যরা যুদ্ধে ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়েন।

মেজর জিয়ার সঙ্গে এক নম্বর সেক্টরের সেকেন্ড-ইন-কমান্ড হিসাবে কাজ শুরু করেন শওকত আলী।

মেজর জিয়া ৩০ মার্চ রামগড় হয়ে সীমান্তের ওপারে চলে যান। তখন পুরো বাহিনীর দায়িত্ব কাঁধে তুলে নেন মীর শওকত আলী। সেনাবাহিনী, বিডিআর (ইপিআর), ছাত্র-জনতা ও আওয়ামী লীগের স্বেচ্ছাসেবক দল নিয়ে গঠিত বাহিনী নিয়ে ২ মে পর্যন্ত বাংলাদেশের ভেতরে থেকেই পাকিস্তানি সেনাবাহিনীর সঙ্গে যুদ্ধ চালিয়ে যান তিনি। সে সময় মুক্তিযুদ্ধের প্রধান কমান্ডার আতাউল গনি ওসমানীর সঙ্গে প্রথম সাাৎ হয় মেজর শওকতের।

প্রবল হামলার মুখে ২ মে বিকেলে রামগড় অতিক্রম করে সীমান্তের ওপারে চলে যান মীর শওকত। ভারতে অবস্থানকালে মেজর জিয়ার সঙ্গে থেকে প্রায় দু’মাস কাজ করেন।

এক পর্যায়ে মেজর শওকতকে শিলং পাঠান জেনারেল ওসমানী। সেখান থেকেই ছাতক ও সুনামগঞ্জ এলাকায় মুক্তিযোদ্ধাদের সংগঠিত করে যুদ্ধ পরিচালনা করেন মীর শওকত আলী।

ওই সময় পাকিস্তানি সেনাবাহিনীর জন্য সিলেট থেকে নদী পথে যেসব নৌকা ও ছোট ছোট জাহাজ রসদপত্র নিয়ে ঢাকার দিকে যেত মীর শওকত আলী তার বাহিনী নিয়ে সেগুলো আটক করে রসদপত্রাদি কেড়ে নিতেন। নিজেদের জন্য কিছুটা রেখে বাকিটা পাঠিয়ে দিতেন হেডকোয়ার্টারে।

এপ্রিলে অস্থায়ী সরকার গঠনের পর ৫ নম্বর সেক্টরের দায়িত্ব দেওয়া হয় মীর শওকত আলীকে। সেক্টর কমান্ডার হিসেবে তার সাংকেতিক নাম দেওয়া হয় `টাইগার লিডার`।

স্বাধীনতার পর মীর শওকত আলী সেনাবাহিনীর বিভিন্ন দপ্তরে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ দায়িত্ব পালন করেন। তিনি ১৯৭২-‘৭৪ সাল পর্যন্ত পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রামে ব্রিগেড কমান্ডার হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করেন।

১৯৭৪-‘৭৫ সালে অন্যান্য ব্রিগেডেরও কমান্ডারের দায়িত্ব পালন করেন।

১৯৭৫ সালে সেনাবাহিনীর চিফ অফ জেনারেল স্টাফ নিযুক্ত হন মীর শওকত। ১৯৭৫-‘৭৭ সালে তিনি পুরান ঢাকা উন্নয়ন কমিটির চেয়ারম্যান ও বাংলাদেশ ফুটবল ফেডারেশনের (বাফুফে) সভাপতির দায়িত্ব পালন করেন। একই সময়ে তিনি ঢাকা অঞ্চলের সামরিক প্রশাসক হিসেবেও দায়িত্ব পালন করেন।

১৯৮০ সালে তিনি সেনাবাহিনীর প্রিন্সিপাল স্টাফ অফিসার পদে নিয়োগ পান। এক বছর এই দায়িত্ব পালন করেন।

মুক্তিযুদ্ধের অসম সাহসী এই যোদ্ধা বাংলাদেশ সেনাবাহিনীর প্রিন্সিপাল স্টাফ অফিসার থাকাকালে জার্মানিতে রাষ্ট্রদূত করে পাঠানো হয়। পরে তাকে পাঠানো হয় যুক্তরাজ্যে।

এরপর তাকে দেশে ফিরিয়ে এনে লে. জেনারেল হিসেবে পদোন্নতি দেওয়া হয়। ১৯৮১ সালের ৯ জুন তাকে বাধ্যতামূলক অবসরে পাঠান এরশাদ।

এরপর বিএনপির রাজনীতিতে জড়িয়ে পড়েন মীর শওকত। ১৯৯১ সালে লালবাগ থেকে সাংসদ নির্বাচিত হন মীর শওকত। এরপর বিএনপি সরকারের খাদ্যমন্ত্রী হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করেন তিনি। পরে শ্রম ও কর্মসংস্থান মন্ত্রণালয়ের দায়িত্ব দেওয়া হয় তাকে। এক পর্যায়ে বিএনপির ভাইস চেয়ারম্যান মনোনীত হন মীর শওকত আলী।

তার আগে মীর শওকত আলী ঢাকা মহানগর বিএনপি সভাপতির দায়িত্বও পালন করেন।

ক্রীড়া ও কৃষিখাতে অবদান রাখার জন্য তিনি দু`বার রাষ্ট্রপতি স্বর্ণপদকে ভূষিত হন।

মৃত্যুকালে সেক্টর কমান্ডারস ফোরামের ভাইস-চেয়ারম্যান পদে দায়িত্ব পালন করছিলেন তিনি।

তিনি তিন খণ্ডে তার আত্মজীবনী গ্রন্থ `এভিডেন্স` লিখেছেন।

মীর শওকত আলীর জীবনসঙ্গিনী বেগম তাহমিনা শওকত। তাদের তিন মেয়ে। তারা মায়ের সঙ্গে লন্ডনে রয়েছেন। একমাত্র ছেলে মীর জুলফিকার আলী মার্শাল ছিলেন আইটি প্রকৌশলী। তিনি ২০০৯ সালে মাত্র ৩৬ বছর বয়সে মৃত্যুবরণ করেন।

Whats more amazing, I'm yet to read any letter of condolence from the Govt, President or from the PM herself.

The very Govt who is feeding off on the idea of trials of War Criminals are so very quiet on the passing of a War Hero goes to show their true mentality. Their sole purpose is to sabotage their political rival and I doubt we would ever see the light of the justice.

yeah....i understand what you mean. well, what can we expect from our so called "Leaders" !? Hasina could have set an example, but seems like nobody cares what other thinks...the irony of our life !!

I always feel we have not given enough respect to all our sector commanders. Also the new generation may not know what sector commanders did or who they are. This is how we are, always forget our heroes, do not know when we will change.

In fact to echo Rabz' comment, considering that it was the Sector Commanders Forum and the general public/ civil society that highlighted the need for a War Crimes Tribunal during the immediate past Caretaker Govt era. AL simply jumped on this bandwagon afterwards to build up their cred.

Very tasteless and tactless from the Office of the PM, President and the Ruling party. Mir Shawkat Ali's life works are higher than his position in the erstwhile BNP.

And to also add to yaseer's comment: The current generation is being fed all sorts of propaganda, but we do not even know who are our bir uttoms, bir bikrams and bir protiks. We know personally of so many Muktijoddhas, but they are not the ones tooting their own Muktijoddha horns. Its the ruling party that seems to take all the undue credit. Especially in a country where many bir muktijoddhas continue to live in poverty and in dire circumstances.
