Great lessons to be learned here. The other day, BD Government banned all 20+ year old buses (to lessen air pollution) in Dhaka particularly. No notice or warning. Not giving time for the owners to adjust accordingly. I heard first day of the ban, the citizens in lakhs if not millions had very hard time traveling through out the city. Guess what happened? They are back by popular demand, lol. We do not learn anything just recite the verses.

TE this is not an acceptable explanation of the three verses that deals with Alchohol. There are several verses on the same issues in quran and the quran also explains that "the same thing is said in different ways, so that you understand/pay heed"
This theory that Alchohol was allowed initially is completely Bogus, Alchohol have been forbidden for Jews and it has been discouraged in Bible, similarly it has been discouraged in Islam. As Allah repetaedly sys in Quran also, His laws do not change.
For your information, The word 'haram' has been explicitly used for items like Pork, Blood, Dead Meat etc etc explicitly Haram items. Alchohol has been severely discouraged and you have been advised to refrain from it. Same has been done for lies, killing innicents etc etc many other issues. So Alchohol is clearly a DON"T category Item, but using the word Haram while Allah hasn't used, is not ok. He definitely has different treatment for different category of offenders and the Haram category is definitely different than an 'Act of Satan'/ Don't. Which is greater sin, Allah knows the best, but to human knowledge, 'Haram' should be the worst of all.
It's a book authored by Allah, He has used each and every word very justifiably, so replacing His words with a word of our common understanding might make it grossly wrong. And if he was undecisive wheather to Ban Alchohol or not that's unjust blame on the creator. He simply explains the same things from different perspectives, He wasn't un decisive.

I agree with BANFAN's argument that 'intoxicants' are not explicitly stated as Haram in the Quran. The Quran explicitly forbids pork, carrion, blood, etc. However, the intoxicants and "games of chance" are not explicitly mentioned as haram (unlawful, forbidden). They are told to be an abomination from Satan himself, and thus Muslims must abstain.
Essentially its a matter of semantics, then... Alcohol not being 'forbidden' or 'prohibited', but being 'impermissible' and 'most reprehensible'.
Another thing from childhood days: some people say that crabs, crustaceans and lobsters are forbidden. The Qur'an explicitly says that "halal to you is the catch of the sea". Crustaceans may have been "disliked" - "makruh" by Rasulullah, but that does not make it haram.

Wow, what a pointless debate about alcohol. At the end of the days, you still can't drink guys. Semantics are useless in practice.
About my favourite drink: I have tried a lot of fruit juices (home made), but I like my pineapple juice best.
